The Asia Cassava Breeders Network (ACB-Net) is a regional community of practice that brings together cassava breeders and other interested stakeholders for systematic collaboration on cassava genetic enhancement and crop improvement. ACB-Net was established in late 2015 and is an open community and includes classical breeding programs, molecular breeding laboratories, and public and civil society partners interested in variety evaluations.

ACB-Net is coordinated by an elected steering committee and facilitates regional collaboration around:

Germplasm exchange and evaluation Exchange and sharing of parental materials, advanced clones and sources of new traits. ACB-Net will make such materials available to the cassava breeders’ community in line with international treaties and national regulations. Systematic evaluation and performance evaluation sharing in will be fomented.

Capacity building and building a new generation of breeders ACB-Net will develop a range of capacity building activities as to support the career path for young scientists entering the field. It draw on international and regional expertise in breeding, genetics, genomics and related fields. Regular capacity building events, including face-to-face and video conferencing, as well as online digital learning will be promoted.

Sharing of breeding methods, protocols and practices While the general breeding pipeline follows widely accepted procedures from single row clonal evaluation trials (CET), preliminary yield trials (PYT), Advanced Yield Trials (AYT) to regional trials (RT), the development of new breeding methods, tools and protocols is ever evolving. Therefore sharing of new advancement and standard practices is key to facilitate temporal, spatial and cross-breeding-program comparisons.

Varietal dissemination and marketing To assure impact of breeding programs it is important to stimulate pre- and post-varietal release activities that assure end-user acceptance and accelerated uptake. Experiences will be shared among ACB-Net members, including participatory methods, variety catalogues, demonstration trials and rapid multiplication schemes

Communication and information exchange The regular exchange of information and general communication between breeders will be key to triggers collaboration. Therefore ACB-Net will promote communication media and regular meetings among its members. This will facilitate the flow of expert knowledge and will help our wide variety of member organizations to collectively contribute to the improvement of the regional cassava sector through genetic enhancement.
